Ancient Domains of Mystery (ADOM) is one of the most successful roguelike games of all time. It was released in 1994, and still has a solid number of active players.
At the start, as in other games of this genre, you have to create and customize your character, choosing from among various races (elf, human, dwarf, orc, troll, etc.) and classes (warrior, mage, priest, thief, explorer, etc.). You can also randomize your character, or customize it down to the smallest detail.
Once you have your character set up, you can start fulfilling the prophecy that serves as the backdrop for the game's story: a hero will rise from among the rest to end the darkness that looms over Ancardia. It won't be easy to succeed in this enterprise, though.
Following the traditions of roguelike games, Ancient Domains of Mystery has an interface controlled by the keyboard only (you should read the manual before playing), permanent death, random and fatal dungeons, and very simple graphics that will take veteran roguelike players back to the good old days.
Ancient Domains of Mystery (ADOM) is a highly entertaining RPG that has more to it than most modern commercial games. Its main drawback (or asset, depending on your point of view) is that it takes time to master the controls and all the options they offer.

Ancient Domains of Mystery (known as ADOM to the most avid fans) is a complex dungeon crawl set in the best tradition of UNIX megahit Rogue, and in many ways is a direct spiritual descendent. While other Roguelike games (e.g. NetHack and Unreal World ) emphasize plot, quests, and puzzles, ADOM retains and greatly expands Rogue 's hack & slash. ADOM (Ancient Domains Of Mystery) is one of the most successful roguelike games ever created, boasting a brilliant mix of story, RPG, exploration, and intensely strategic and flexible combat. The Steam version adds various Deluxe features like achievements, difficulty level customization and various play modes. Ancient Domains Of Mystery (ADOM) official site is one of the first things I install on any computer I own or borrow. That's been the case since I first discovered the game around twenty years ago. Created by Thomas Biskup, ADOM is one of the great traditional roguelikes, a combination of randomised dungeon crawling and a hand-crafted overworld.

Neither game executables work. ADOM/CWSDPMI.EXE just takes you to Dos Box where the program is entered. When I use ADOM/ADOM.EXE it goes to the start but a message says the ADOM session was aborted. I've played ADOM here before and it worked. What happened?
